About PGDIS Print
PGDIS coordinates research, education and training in preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), requiring a close collaboration of obstetricians, fertility specialists, embryologists and human geneticists, to insure safety and accuracy of PGD and its application into clinical practice for improvement of genetic practices and reproductive medicine.

PGDIS was organized in October 2002 and inaugurated during the 5th International Symposium on Preimplantation Genetics, Antalya, Turkey, June 5-7, 2003. Founding Members of PGDIS are the participants of the 4th International Symposium on Preimplantation Genetics, Limassol, Cyprus, 2002; and 5th International Symposium on Preimplantation Genetics, Antalia, Turkey, 2003. The official Journal of PGDIS is Reproductive BioMedicine Online, which has recently published many papers in this field.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society provides an overview of the major PGD milestones:
  • 1968: Sexing of Rabbit Embryos at the Blastocyst Stage
  • 1978: Birth of the First IVF Baby
  • 1990: Sexing Human Preimplantation Embryo, & Polar Body Analysis for Mendelian
                Disease; First PGD Baby Born
  • 1993: FISH Analysis for Sexing and for PGD of Aneuploidies
  • 1996: PGD for Chromosomal Translocations
  • 1999: PGD for Late Onset Common Disorders with Genetic Predisposition
  • 2000: Preimplantation HLA Typing
  • 2002: First Thousand PGD Babies Born

PGD worldwide experience includes close to 50,000 PGD cycles performed by more than 100 centers around the world. The majority of PGD (more than 40,000 cycles) were for aneuploidy testing, up to 6,000 for medelian disorders, and approximately, 3,000 for translocations.

An increasing number of cases (over 600) is being performed for preimplantation HLA typing.
